How does PDLC smart film work?
PDLC (Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal) smart film contains microscopic liquid crystals suspended in a polymer matrix. When electrical current is applied, the crystals align uniformly, making the glass transparent with 95% clarity. When the power is off, crystals scatter randomly, turning the glass opaque while still allowing diffused natural light through. It can be controlled via wall switches, remotes, smartphone apps, or building automation systems. The switching happens in milliseconds — it’s virtually instantaneous.

Smart film typically costs between $40-$55 per square foot for the product, plus $20-$30 per square foot for professional installation. Can smart film be applied to existing glass?
Yes. Smart film is a retrofit solution that adheres directly to existing glass surfaces — no glass replacement needed. This makes it significantly more affordable than smart glass, which requires entirely new manufactured panels. Smart film can be applied to windows, glass partitions, interior doors, shower enclosures, skylights, and any smooth glass surface. Does smart film provide privacy at night with lights on?
Yes. When switched to opaque mode, PDLC smart film provides complete privacy regardless of lighting conditions — day or night, interior lights on or off. The film scatters light in all directions, preventing anyone from seeing through from either side. This is a key advantage over traditional one-way mirror films, which only work when one side is brighter than the other.
How long does smart film last?
High-quality PDLC smart film has an expected lifespan of 15+ years or over 100,000 switching cycles — whichever comes first. It requires virtually no maintenance.
