How Smart Film Works

Smart Film uses PDLC (Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal) technology. Liquid crystal molecules are suspended within a polymer matrix and react instantly when electrical current is applied.

Power On

Molecules align in the same direction, allowing light to pass through and creating a crystal-clear glass surface.

Power Off

Molecules scatter randomly, producing an elegant frosted privacy effect while maintaining natural daylight.

Smart Film Questions & Answers

How does PDLC smart film work?
PDLC (Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal) smart film contains microscopic liquid crystals suspended in a polymer matrix. When electrical current is applied, the crystals align uniformly, making the glass transparent with 95% clarity. When the power is off, crystals scatter randomly, turning the glass opaque while still allowing diffused natural light through. It can be controlled via wall switches, remotes, smartphone apps, or building automation systems. The switching happens in milliseconds — it’s virtually instantaneous.
Smart film typically costs between $75-$100 per square foot, including the film and professional installation. Each zone or room also requires a transformer (approximately $150 each). Projects over 100 sq ft receive volume discounts. Call us at (469) 831-3101 for a free custom quote based on an on-site measurement.
Yes. Smart film is a retrofit solution that adheres directly to existing glass surfaces — no glass replacement needed. This makes it significantly more affordable than smart glass, which requires entirely new manufactured panels. Smart film can be applied to windows, glass partitions, interior doors, shower enclosures (as laminated smart glass), skylights, and any smooth glass surface. Our installers at Sun Masters DFW handle the complete process including electrical connections.
Yes. When switched to opaque mode, PDLC smart film provides complete privacy regardless of lighting conditions — day or night, interior lights on or off. The film scatters light in all directions, preventing anyone from seeing through from either side. This is a key advantage over traditional one-way mirror films, which only work when one side is brighter than the other.
High-quality PDLC smart film is rated for millions of switching cycles with a lifespan of 10+ years. It requires virtually no maintenance. Clean it the same way you clean regular glass: soft cloth and standard glass cleaner. Avoid abrasive pads or ammonia-based products. Sun Masters DFW provides a manufacturer warranty with every installation.
Smart film is a retrofit adhesive layer applied to existing glass, while smart glass is a factory-manufactured laminated glass panel with the PDLC layer built in. Smart film costs $75-$100/sqft (installed) vs. $150-$200/sqft for smart glass (new glass plus glazing labor). Smart film is ideal for renovations and existing spaces. Smart glass offers a slightly more seamless finish and is best for new construction or premium architectural projects. Both use identical PDLC technology and deliver the same privacy performance. See the comparison table above for full details.
Yes. Smart film can be custom-cut to include company logos, geometric patterns, decorative borders, and creative designs. This is especially popular for corporate offices that want branded conference room glass, retail storefronts with dynamic displays, and hospitality environments creating unique guest experiences. The switchable portions can be shaped to create partial-privacy effects where some areas remain permanently clear while others switch.

DIY smart film kit or professional install?

You will see “self-install” smart film kits advertised online for less per square foot. Here is the honest difference, from the crew that gets called to fix the kits.

Self-install kit

  • Film ships pre-cut to the sizes you measured; a quarter inch off and the edge shows or the busbar lands in the frame.
  • PDLC film is stiff and laminated. It does not squeegee like tint: trapped air, creases and contaminated edges are permanent.
  • You source the transformer, run the low-voltage wiring and find somewhere to hide it. Most kits leave the electrician to you.
  • If a busbar lifts or a zone stops switching, the film comes off and you buy it again. Kit warranties rarely cover installation damage.

Makes sense for: one small interior pane you can afford to redo.

Sun Masters installed

  • We measure every pane, plan the busbar and wire path so nothing shows, and cut the film to the glass, not to a guess.
  • Clean-room style prep and a wet install by installers who have done conference rooms, lobbies, patio doors and showers across DFW.
  • Transformer sized to the glass, switch or remote wired in, electrician coordinated when power is needed at the window.
  • One warranty on the film, the electronics and the work, from a Carrollton shop that has been here since 1979.
