No. Self-adhesive smart film is not rated for standing water, steam and daily cleaning chemicals, and the edge wiring must stay dry. Inside a shower enclosure, use laminated smart glass with sealed edges. Smart film is fine on a bathroom window or the glass in a bathroom door, which stay dry.
New smart glass runs $150 to $200 per square foot installed. A typical 30 square foot shower panel is $4,500 to $6,000 plus the glazier’s hardware. A bathroom window done with smart film instead is far less; see the cost guide.
Yes, done right. PDLC runs on low voltage from a transformer mounted outside the wet area, and the glass unit has sealed edge connections per the manufacturer. Your electrician installs the power on a GFCI circuit as code requires. On wet-room projects we coordinate the glazier and electrician.
Standard PDLC goes frosted with no power, so the glass is private by default. Flip the switch and it clears. Reverse film that is clear by default is available if you prefer.
Yes. Unlike reflective privacy film, PDLC does not depend on which side is brighter. Frosted is frosted, day or night, lights on or off.
Yes. Wall switch, remote, app, Alexa or Google through the transformer. It can be paired with a motion sensor that frosts the glass when someone walks in.
Exterior bathroom windows, the glass in a bathroom door, a window between a bathroom and a bedroom, and partitions next to a vanity. All of these stay dry, so film is the cheaper and faster choice.
If you never need to see out, yes: frosted film is a fraction of the price and private all the time. Smart film earns its cost when you want a view or daylight on demand, such as a tub window facing a private yard. See our frosted window film page.
Smart glass is cleaned like any shower glass. Smart film on a dry window is cleaned with a soft cloth and a mild, ammonia-free cleaner.
