What is frosted window film?

Frosted window film is a translucent film applied to the inside of existing glass. Frosted glass film, also called etched glass film, gives you the sandblasted look for a fraction of the cost. It scatters light the way etched glass does, so daylight comes through but nobody can see in or out, at any hour. It costs less than etched glass, installs in about an hour per room, and peels off cleanly later if you change your mind.

Why DFW homes use it

  • Bathroom windows and shower glass that face a neighbor or the street. Frosted film for bathroom windows keeps the room bright with no blinds.
  • Entry sidelites and front-door glass so visitors cannot see into the house.
  • Home offices and gyms where you want light but not an audience.
  • Stair and hallway windows that line up with the house next door.
  • HOA-friendly: frosted film is non-reflective and rarely questioned.

Why DFW businesses use it

  • Conference rooms and glass offices: frosted film for office glass is our most common commercial frosted privacy film job, from single doors to full partition walls. A frost band hides screens and faces while the floor stays open.
  • Exam rooms, HR and finance offices where patients and screens must stay out of view.
  • Storefront lower panels that hide stock and the back office.
  • Branding: logos, suite numbers and patterns cut from frost double as signage.
  • Leased space: removable, so landlords say yes. See our commercial window tinting page.

Frosted film styles and opacity

Frost comes in several styles. Pick how much you hide, where you hide it, and whether the glass does double duty as signage.

How much does frosted window film cost?

Frosted film is priced per square foot of glass, installed. Most commercial projects we install run $8 to $25 per square foot; custom-cut bands, gradients and logos are priced per piece, and a bathroom window or a pair of sidelites is quoted after a quick look. Replacing the pane with etched glass usually costs more. Every estimate is free and in writing.

Coverage

Full frost is the simplest. Bands and gradients take more layout time but use less film.

Custom work

Logos, lettering and patterns are plotter-cut to your artwork and priced per piece.

How much glass

One bathroom window versus a floor of glass offices: more glass means a lower rate per foot.

Access

Most frosted jobs are reachable from the floor. Tall atrium glass may need a lift, listed as its own line.

How it works

Free estimate, samples on your glass, installed in about an hour per room.

1

Free estimate

We measure the glass, talk through full frost versus a band or gradient, and bring samples so you can see the opacity on your own window.

2

Layout and cut

Bands are marked at the height you choose; logos and patterns are plotter-cut from your artwork. You approve the layout before anything goes on.

3

Installed and cured

Our own crew cleans the glass, applies the film and trims a clean edge. A little haze for a few days is normal while it cures; then clean it like any window, minus the razor.

Frosted window film FAQ

Does frosted window film work at night?

Yes. Frosted film does not depend on light the way reflective film does. It diffuses the glass itself, so nobody can see through it from either side, day or night, lights on or off.

Can you see through frosted window film?

No. You see light and vague shapes close to the glass, not detail. A person standing inches from a full-frost window shows as a blurred silhouette; a few feet back, nothing. Lighter frosts and gradients let through a little more.

How much light does frosted film block?

Very little. Standard frosted film lets most of the daylight through and simply scatters it, so a frosted bathroom is nearly as bright as a clear one. White-out and blackout films are the ones that cut light.

How much does frosted window film cost in Dallas–Fort Worth?

Frosted film is priced per square foot of glass, installed. Most commercial projects we install run $8 to $25 per square foot, with custom-cut bands, gradients, logos and patterns priced per piece. A bathroom window or a pair of sidelites is quoted after a quick look. The estimate is free and in writing.

Is frosted film better than etched or sandblasted glass?

For most spaces, yes. Film goes on existing glass in an hour, looks the same as acid-etched glass from a few feet away, costs a fraction of replacing the pane, and can be removed or changed later. Etched glass is permanent and means a new pane.

Can you frost only part of the window?

Yes. Frost bands are the most common choice: a 36-, 48- or 60-inch band at eye level with clear glass above, so a room stays private without losing the sky. Gradients fade from frosted at the bottom to clear at the top. We can also cut stripes, dots and patterns.

Can you add a logo or lettering to frosted film?

Yes. We cut logos, names, suite numbers and patterns out of frosted film, or cut frosted graphics to apply on clear glass. It is a common storefront and office request because it doubles as signage.

Will frosted film damage my glass or void the window warranty?

Frosted film is a light, non-metal film with very little heat absorption, so it is safe on almost every glass type, including dual-pane and low-e glass. We still check the glass and the manufacturer’s guidance at the estimate.

How do I clean frosted window film?

A soft cloth or microfiber and a mild, ammonia-free cleaner. No razors, scrub pads or abrasive cleaners. The film is on the inside of the glass, so it stays out of the weather.

How long does frosted film last?

Indoors, quality XPEL and 3M frosted films last many years and carry the manufacturer’s warranty, 10 or 12 years on commercial films. It is a permanent-looking finish that is still removable if the room’s use changes.

Can frosted film be removed?

Yes. A technician removes it with heat and a scraper and cleans the glass back to new. That makes it the right choice for leased offices, rentals and rooms that may be reconfigured.

Is frosted film a good choice for a bathroom window?

It is the most common frosted film job we do. Private day and night, and you keep the daylight. It also works on shower enclosures and the glass in bathroom doors.

Is frosted film a good choice for conference rooms and offices?

Yes. A frost band at eye level hides whiteboards, screens and faces while the room still feels open, and it keeps HR offices and exam rooms out of view. We installed frosted privacy film on PepsiCo’s Frisco offices and on glass office walls in Dallas. If you want the glass clear between meetings, smart film is the switchable version.

What is the difference between frosted film and decorative film?

Frosted film is one kind of decorative film: a plain etched-glass look. Decorative window film covers the wider family of patterns, textures, gradients, colors and printed graphics. Most privacy jobs use plain frost; most design jobs mix frost with a pattern or gradient.

Does frosted film block UV?

Yes. Like our other architectural films it blocks 99% of UV, so it also protects floors, furniture and merchandise near the glass from fading.
